The Yellow Energy Initiative (YEI) provides effective technical and financial solutions for climate change adaptation, poverty reduction and circular economy. YEI programs and projects aim at enabling long-term positive impact and systemic change. Impoverished communities are provided with clean energy, inclusive business opportunities and capacity building. The YEI project platform enables easy identification and reservation of impactful CSR projects.

The provision of access to energy and sustainability-enhancing mechanisms enables local communities to start new life-enhancing businesses. With the support of the international CSR community, new rural electrification projects are carried out. Joint ventures are established. Sustainable local economic development is enabled.

Like the yellow color, the initiative creates optimism, confidence, and resilience. Providing access to electricity is the most effective way to reduce poverty. At the same time, it offers a great opportunity to conduct sustainable business operations.

YEI Projects

Shamanic Waste-to-Energy Project, Western Indonesia

One of the earth’s best-preserved indigenous cultures in Western indonesia is close to being extinguished by the impact of unsustainable modernization. The pristine nature surrounding the shaman and hunter communities is endangered by illegal logging, plantations, and tourism. Lack of proper waste management and inadequate energy equity have become serious issues for sustainable development of the communities and environmental protection.

This project provides the communities with a waste-to-energy solution that both improves local energy equity through increased renewable power supply and reduces poverty by enabling new forms of employment and business activities. The investor may engage in power sales and inclusive business with project beneficiaries.

Bamboo Gasification Project, Southern Myanmar

A mechanical forest industry factory with substantial amounts of wood waste as well as nearby communities suffer from unreliable and low-quality electricity grid. Local industrial operations fail to reach their intended profitability and smaller metal- and woodworking workshops are unable to use, for instance, welding equipment due to the erratic power supply.

This project provides the factory with a bamboo gasification power plant that will also provide the neighboring community with reliable supply of renewable power. A one kilometer transmission line will be run from the factory to the households and workshops and the existing poor-quality grid replaced with a new mini-grid. The investor may do inclusive business with the entrepreneurial community while selling power to the factory in a joint venture arrangement.

Vietnam 001

Floating Island Power Project, Southern Vietnam

Rice paddy workers/farmers who live on floating islands in the Mekong delta have meager access to electricity. Their income level is mere 40–80 EUR/month, which causes safety risk hazards and insecurity and deprivation of education and other employment opportunities. This YEI project equips these households with solar home systems (SHS) and value-adding appliances that help mitigate these problems.

The investor has the opportunity to partner with the local government on a lease scheme for the provision of SHS and/or with project beneficiaries on new inclusive business operations (production and sale of refigerated beverages, handicrafts, and tailoring services).

Vietnam 002

Droplets of Sunlight Project, Eastern Vietnam

Farmers without access to the grid face many barriers trying to develop profitable business in Vietnam, a country whose agriculture sector equals a fifth of the national GDP: Because of insufficient access to electricity, environmentally-unfriendly methods of power generation are used. Due to the high diesel price, much of the otherwise obtainable profits are lost. The crops do not develop optimally, which leads to lower sales prices. Unprofessional irrigation of the plantations leads to non-effective production.

The project provides the farmers with a reliable and environmentally-friendly way for drip irrigation. Farmers gain access to sustainable electricity either through co-investment or lease scheme. CO2 emissions at the farms are reduced. Local irrigation knowledge and methods are improved. Knowledge of renewable energy enabled farming is increased. The relationship between investment in sustainable farming methods and profitability is effectively communicated.

Project Budget: 700,000 USD

Output: Solar powered water pumping and drip irrigation systems, new inclusive businesses

Vietnam 003

Paradise Power Project, Southern Vietnam

The main sources of livelihood for a community living in an exceptionally picturesque setting in Southern Vietnam are fishing, tourism, and agriculture. Further development of the local economy is slow as the supply of power is erratic and the power supplied is of relatively low quality. The current diesel powered grid is insufficient to cover the needs of the local industry and population.

This project contributes to the provision of electricity, local economic development, and improvement of safety, security, and well-being of the local population by introducing a solar power park that increases the power supply and improves the quality of distributed electricity. With the upgraded power supply, the community can start new business operations and develop existing entrepreneurial activities. The investor engages in a power sales effort through a power purchase agreement and may promote inclusive business opportunities amongst the population.
